THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR BIOLOGY
194/1 Stachky Ave., Rostov-on-Don, Russia, 344090
The Research Institute for Biology, founded in 1935, is one of the oldest divisions in the structure of Rostov State University. The Institute provides an experimental basis for fundamental research and practical experiments of the leading specialists from the Faculty of Biology and Soil of Rostov State University.Biochemical and genetic research is being carried out in the Institute to study the impact of extreme conditions on the human organism, specifically of excess oxygen pressure.
Unique methods of growing non-nuclear mutant plants have been developed here. The collection of sunflower and mustard non-nuclear mutants is the only one of this kind in Europe.
Director GUSKOV, Yevgeny Petrovich, D.S. in Biology, Prof.
Tel. 28-08-85.
Staff: 120 members, including 8 with D.S. and 37 with Cand.S. degrees.
Departments:
Department of Physical and Chemical Biology ( headed by Sherstnev K.B.)
Depertment of Ecology ( headed by Valkov V.F.)
Department of Molecular Genetics (headed by Taran S.F.)
Institutes main areas of research:
molecular control mechanisms of metabolism under normal, extreme and pathological conditions.;
chlorophyll mutation induction of plastid origin with higher plants and creation of a collection of sunflower and mustard chlorophyll mutants with greater tenacity to extreme factors;
rational use and productivity advancement of natural resources ( water and soil) in national economy;
A portable hemoluminometer LM-01 has been developed in the Institute. It registers hemoluminescence in biological liquids and chemical systems. Its parameters are comparable to hemoluminometer LKB 1250, produced in Sweden.
The Institute provides courses for the retraining and improvement of professional proficiency in such specializations as biochemistry of extreme conditions, somatic hybridization methods, growing plastid mutants of plants, methods of hemoluminescence analysis, methods of evaluation of extreme conditions.
