A.V.Belokon, President of the University of RostovThe University of Rostov-on-Don has by now become an academic, research, and production complex, consisting of 11 faculties (Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics and Mathematics, Geology and Geography, Biology and Soil, Economics, Philosophy, Philology and Journalism, History, Law and Psychology), 7 research institutes (Biology, Neurocybernetics, Physics, Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, Physical and Organic Chemistry, Geochemistry of Atmosphere, and the North Caucasian Research Institute of Economic and Social Problems), the Research and Design Technology office "Piezopribor", the Computing Centre, the Research Library, the University Press, the Institute for Retraining and Developing Professional Standards of Teachers in Humanities and Social Sciences, the Experimental Farm, the Botanical Garden, the field practice camp "Nikel" (Adygeya),the summer recreation and sport camp "Limanchik" on the Black Sea shore and many other teaching,research and auxiliary units.
The teaching staff of the University of Rostov has high academic qualification. 1007 Teachers and 1120 researchers are employed by all the faculties and research institutes. They include 14 members and 10 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 168 Doctors of Science (the senior research doctoral degree in this country) and full professors, more than one thousand Candidates of Science, (corresponding to the Ph. D. degree), 11 Winners of State Prize, 12 recipients of the Distinguished Scientists of the Russian Federation award.
Training in 28 professions is presently effected within the university, among them the training in some new and prestigious ones that correspond to the demands of the contemporary Russian society, such as "sociology", "sociognomics", "Romance and Germanic philology", "economics and production management".
Seminar on economic theory and practiceThe introduction of market relations as well as dramatic social and economic changes inside the country resulted in considerable changes in teaching, influencing both the content and the goals of education. The main directions of these changes are related with the introduction of modern educational methods such as "problem", "module" ,and "large block" teaching, the introduction of alternative elements of education, etc., and with the acceptance by the university of the so called "multi-level system of education" (i.e., Bachelor's and Master's levels). The faculties of Mechanics and Mathematics, Philosophy, History, Biology and. Soil, Philology and Journalism have already implemented it.
